The courtyard house is one of the few building types that have been developed independently in differing cultures around the globe. The importance and intrinsic value of courtyard houses stems, alongside the social and cultural contexts, above all from climatic conditions. This book offers an overview of the various historical building types across several cultures as well as new and current typologies. Besides the well-known examples, transformations and typological developments are explored.
